If you are thinking about adding a new kitten to your family and you have an older pet, such as a cat or a dog, introductions will have to be made and this is something that causes many pet owners to worry. Below, you will find some helpful tips that should make the introduction process more seamless:
1. Take it slow. For the first few weeks, you may confine your new kitten to an area of your house until your older pet gets used to the new addition.
2. Leave door slightly open. After you have created a space for the new kitten, leave the door open a crack throughout the day. This way, other animals know the kitten is present.
3. Get other animals used to the kitten's scent. Take an old shirt, towel or blanket and rub your kitten against it to gather its scent. Then, let the older animal smell it to get used to the kitten's scent.
4. Be patient. Usually, the introduction phase will last one to two weeks. Then, your animals should be on friendly terms and used to one another. Patience is essential during those initial weeks.
