Why Do Dogs Snap at People When They Are Eating?

Does your dog snap at you when you approach it while it is eating? If you answered "yes", chances are that your dog is communicating to you that it is the pack leader and that you should leave it alone. The pack mentality is that the "leader" gets to eat first and this is a very primitive canine instinct.
If you want to stop your dog from snapping at you while it is eating food, you need to establish that you are 100% the pack leader at all times and consistently. If you are wishy washy, you will confuse the dog and never assert with confidence that you are in charge. Your dog will then remain dominant and continue with its aggressive behaviors.
One way to assert your authority as the pack leader is by having your dog follow you during walks. When walking your dog, you should always be in front and it should be behind you. This is pack leader behavior that will reinforce who is in charge in your household. If problems persist and your dog remains aggressive, it may be a wise idea to hire a local trainer or seek guidance from your veterinarian who can help.
