With Hurricane Irene scheduled to hit the East Coast, many are planning for emergency evacuations and taking extra precautions. If you live in the Eastern states that are expected to be impacted by the hurricane and you have pets, such as cats and dogs, you may wonder what you can do to protect your animals.
One of the best things you can do is obtain a rescue alert sticker, which can be placed outside of your home. This sticker informs rescue workers that there are animals inside your residence should you need to evacuate. When you get the sticker, be sure to place it in an area that is clearly visible to emergency response crews.
Another thing you can do if you have to evacuate is make sure you have emergency supplies for not only your family, but also your pets. Pack extra dog food, disposable litter trays, feeding bowls, extra leashes, blankets and bottled water. Having these extra items will enable you to take care of your pets should you be forced to leave your home.
