Why Are Leashes Important?

If you own a dog, you may be required by the laws of your state to put a collar and a leash on your pet when you are outside or in public. Such laws exist to protect people, but there are other reasons why you should have your dog on a leash while going for walks or while out in public.
First, a leash may prevent your dog from chasing after people or other animals. Dogs naturally get excited when they see other people or animals and may want to run after them. However, when they are on a leash, you have control and can prevent this from happening.
Second, many dogs run off and cause their owners much heartache when they don't return. Instead of having your dog get lost, you can make sure it stays right by your side when it is secured on a leash.
Finally, a leash may save your dog's life. If your dog runs off into the street while walking, it could easily get hit by a vehicle. However, when it is on a leash, you can avoid such hazards.
