One of the responsibilities that dog owners fear the most is trimming their dogs' nails. However, there are a few simple tips you can follow to make this task easier on you and your pet:
When cutting your dog's nails, always make sure that you are using a pair of clippers that are sharp. You can buy special nail clippers at your local pet store or even at your vet.
Make sure that you are calm and relaxed when cutting your dog's nails. Also make sure that your pet is in a comfortable position as you may need to clasp onto his or her paw while cutting.
Take your time and start at the very tip of the nail. Snip just a little at a time and when you start to see pink tissue near the top of the nail, stop cutting. Do not cut this area as it will hurt your dog and cause him or her to bleed.
If your dog has dark nails, be very careful as it is difficult to see where to stop cutting.
Should you accidentally cause your dog to bleed while trimming its nails, apply pressure and cotton or even baby powder to stop the bleeding.
