During the summer, you may want your dog to join you and your family as you take trips to the beach. This can mean fun for everyone, but you do have to be careful when you take your canine to waterfronts. Below, there are several tips and precautions that will help you keep your pet safe while enjoying sun, water and play:
Did you know that dogs are vulnerable in the sun and can get sunburned just like humans? Many people don't know this, but veterinarians suggest that dog owners invest in dog sun block which should be applied to exposed areas to prevent burns and even cancer.
All dogs can't swim and some are just weak swimmers. Always watch your dog when it is near the water as it may not be a strong swimmer, especially in an ocean with strong currents and waves.
Your dog may be tempted to drink water from the beach, but do everything you can to keep it from lapping up salt water which can lead to dehydration. It can also lead to your dog getting bad diarrhea. Keep your dog hydrated by bringing bottled water with you and pouring it into a bowl for your pet to drink when its thirsty.
