Keeping Your Pets Outside during Cold Weather Months

During the Winter months, dog and cat owners often wonder how long they can keep their pets outside. While it is safe to allow dogs and cats to go outside when the weather gets a bit colder, it is advised that pet owners do not leave their animals outdoors for too long.
Many vets suggest that pet owners keep their cats indoors during the Winter months. This way, the cats will not wander or be left outside for too long. If cats are adamant about getting outdoors, some vets suggest that pet owners let them lose in their garages so they stay warm.
Dogs on the other hand need to go outside to relieve themselves. Veterinarians say it is OK to allow dogs to go outside, but they should be kept outdoors for the absolute minimum time to avoid conditions like hypothermia. Once the weather starts to hit the single digits, dogs should be outside no longer than 10 minutes.
