After four birds were discovered dead in the San Gabriel and Cerritos Valley, all four were brought in to be tested for viruses.
What researchers found was that all four did in fact test positive for the West Nile Virus. This virus is spread through mosquitoes that have been infected by it. Both humans and animals are susceptible to the deadly virus. While the California West Nile Virus website reports that no people have been infected with the virus this year, it does state that 23 birds were found infected by the virus.
The first specimens to be discovered with the West Nile Virus were birds in Los Angeles County. They are also believed to be the first birds that have been infected with the virus in the county so far this year.
However, it is important to remember that humans are in fact susceptible to the West Nile virus and should see a doctor if they have a fever, fatigue, body aches, or a skin rash.
