Dog Bite Tips from Postal Workers

Mail carriers with the U.S. Postal Service all too often hear "Don't worry, my dog won't bite," only to learn that the opposite is true. To help themselves and others avoid dogs biting them, the service is offering the public a few helpful hints.
Since dogs can become protective of their territory, i.e. their home, they are more likely to view actions like delivering mail to be a threat. If you are approaching someone's home for the first time, take extra care when a dog is present. Should the dog start to threaten you, do not scream. Back away slowly, without making eye contact, until you can no longer see the animal. If you think the dog is going to bite you, try to place an object - like a purse or backpack - between you and the animal.
If you know that your dog is not friendly towards mail carriers, place him in another room when deliveries are made.
By taking these steps, you can protect yourself and others.
