Pet Insurance
The purchase of pet insurance is on the rise throughout the country. Like health and dental insurance for humans, pet insurance protects pets in the event of an accident or illness. Most pet insurance plans also include coverage for vaccinations, annual checkups, and general wellness care. Furthermore, many insurance companies offer multiple policies so you can choose the extent of coverage based on your pet's needs.
Why pet insurance?
Veterinary care is expensive, even a simple routine check-up can cost about $50 on average, and that's just to see the vet. Should your pet need X-rays, an MRI, laboratory work,
dental work, medication or advanced medical treatment your bill will be much higher. Should your pet require
surgery,
emergency care, or overnight hospitalization you could end up paying thousands.
Who should buy pet insurance?
While all pet owners can benefit from having a pet insurance policy, those people with animals that have a high risk of injury, disease, or health complications should seriously consider getting a policy. With dogs in particular, certain breeds are more prone to injury or disease than others. For example, Bernese Mountain dogs and other large breeds are more prone to injury due to their large size and weight. In another example, bulldogs are notorious for having skin and eye problems.
How much does pet insurance cost?
While the cost of pet insurance varies depending on the type of animal, the breed, your pet's age, and the extent of coverage you have selected, pet insurance policies tend to be very affordable. On average you can expect to pay between $10-$45 a month, but there are policies available for as low as $7.50 a month. To find the best rate, be sure to speak with representatives from multiple insurance companies and ask them to quote you a price. Then compare those prices with the extent of coverage you will get with the policy.
