Many people are unaware of the fact that overfeeding their dogs can lead to serious health problems. Some of these health problems include diabetes, obesity, arthritis as well as heart disease. Due to the fact that overfeeding can have serious health complications, it is important to follow appropriate proper feeding standards.
Here are suggested daily guidelines for dog feeding amounts (apply to dry and wet dog food):
10 lbs or less- 1/3 - 1 cup
10-25 lbs - 1-2 ¼ cups
25-50 lbs -2 ¼ - 3 ¾ cups
50-75 lbs - 3 ¾ - 5 cups
Over 75 lbs - 5-8 cups
Dogs have insatiable appetites! This means they will continue to eat food as long as it is given to them. The only way they will stop eating is if we do not give them food. Aside from following food amount guidelines, it is also important to avoid feeding our dogs when they beg for a table scraps or treats. Remember, the more you overfeed, the more prone your dog will be toward diseases.
